Behind the Palazzo Pitti is the Boboli garden which dates back to the 16th C and is one of the
largest and beautiful Italian style gardens. It is a very suggesting
place thanks to the beauty of the panoramic views. The garden
extends over a vast area of 45000 square meters, forming an
open-air museum with antique and Renaissance statues, grottoes,
rare trees and bushes arranged in geometric patterns,
fountains with sculptures and lots more.
Inside you can admire:
- The 16th C grottos of Buontalenti which is a blend of stalactites and
statues. The cave is located on the left side of Boboli Garden entrance.
It is formed by a series of three communicating chambers. and contains Giambologna’s Venus and Michaelangelo’s four
prisoners replica.
- The Amphitheater, shaped like a Roman circus and with Egyptian
obelisk
- The Vivaio di Nettuno (Neptune hatchery), a swamp-like pond housing
the state of Neptune standing on a rock and
aiming with his trident at a fish.
- The Kaffehaus: Pavillon with 18th C cupola.
- The "Statua dell' Abbondanza" (Wealth statue) by Giambologna
- The " Giardino del Cavaliere" and "Palazzina del Cavaliere"
- The splendid "Porta Romana" (Roman door), still preserving the
ancient 14th C wings.
The garden rises towards the top of the hill where emerges the towering
Forte di Belvedere, a scenic point with views of the city of Florence.
