La Badia.
The abbey is located 3 km just outside of Orvieto, and
emerges with its dodecagonal bell-tower among olive groves and
vineyards. It is a monumental complex that attracts the people which
passes on the road circling Orvieto's tufa rock. First news dates back
to the 12th C and the abbey can be considered one of the most important
examples of Medieval architecture.
It has a lovely cloister very
fascinating. In the ancient refectory and in the church houses a
big "Crucifixion and Saints" and some of the most important frescos of
Umbrian school. Next is the oratory with a fresco of "Madonna, Child and
Saints Agostino and Severo". In the same place are also preserved some
13th C frescos among which a beautiful Annunciation recalling Pietro
Lorenzetti style. The complex has been converted in hotel and
restaurant.
