The Church of Misericordia is located in Orvieto, Via della Misericordia no. 4/A
and takes the name from the seat of the Confraternita
(brotherhood) that resided there since the sixteenth century. It
was built around the 1500's and was dedicated to St. John Decollate
(there is a bas-relief above the door). The church preserves the altar
(unfortunately in poor condition) and a wonderful fresco-cycle
covering all the walls and the ceilings depicting "Stories from the life
of St. Jean the Baptist" (1666)
What
also attracts the visitor is the choir which encircles the main room and
features allegorical figures such as the Death with the scythe, skull
and crossbones etc., as it would have been in a tribunal of Inquisition.
This is the feeling when people goes there.
It is a
pity that such a beautiful and impressive sight is not open to public,
but for your best knowledge here are some pictures taken in 2005.
