St. Giovenale was built in 1004 over a preexistent temple
dedicated to Jupiter thanks to the contribute of seven noble and rich
families of Orvieto. It's not sure but people says it was the first
ancient Cathedral of Orvieto. The interior of St. Giovenale,
absolutely to visit, preserves 12th C frescos and is a rich and
interesting medieval repertory of painting. Is has 3 naves interior whit
8 massive tufa pillars on which are remains of frescos. The abside has
Gothic shape and along the walls have been discovered several 14th and
16th C frescos among which is an interesting "Maestą" dating back to
1300's , best known like Madonna del Soccorso (Madonna of rescue),
and "Madonna delle Grazie and Saints" a fresco by Sienese school.
The marble altar is a beautiful example of Byzantine sculpture. On the
right side of the church opens a portal with the representation of
St. Giovenale" in the above lunetta.
