The Certosa
di Pontignano lies 8 km outside of Siena in a hilly landscape
among olive groves and vineyards. The Certosa dates back to 1343.
Inside there are three cloisters. One is in the Renaissance
style, with a well-head and a fine 15th century portal, the
second one has brick loggia and a 14th century portal, the
third is larger and decorated with frescos.
In the church
are frescos of the life of the friars by Francesco Vanni and a
fine 16th century wooden chancel.
Next is a bug
chapel with a Crucifixion by Francesco Vanni and other works by
minor painters.
The Certosa
of Pontignano preserves its original atmosphere of oasis of
peace and despite
nowadays the Certosa is a branch of Siena's University it is
still open to tourists.
