Spello:

Spello is a medieval hilltop town in Umbria on the slopes of mount Subasio, close to Perugia and Assisi. The town has an ancient and suggestive look and it is very interesting due to its Roman remains and Renaissance works that bear witness to its important past.

Sightseeing:

  • The Duomo of Santa Maria Maggiore: Romanesque church dating back to the 11th century. Many works of art. Rich interiors with frescoes by " Pinturicchio" ( 1501) and floors with majolica tiles of Deruta. Of note is the ligneous Chorus by " Pier Nicola" by Spoleto.

  • The church of Sant' Andrea : 3rd century building, It hosts a big painting by " Pinturicchio" ( Madonna and Saints) and a Giottesque school crucifix. Other works of art.

  • Pinacoteca : It is hosted in Palazzo dei Canonici, close to the Duomo and preserves many works of art. Of note are the ligneous statues dating back to the 12th Century and a nice silver and copper crucifix by Paolo Vanni . Some church ornaments and jewelry are on display.

  • Town Hall: Seat of library and of archives. Emilio Greco's collection, with nice drawings and sculptures of this contemporary artist, is a sight not to be missed.

  • San Lorenzo : Nice church of the 17th century, interiors with paintings, sculptures, inlaid works.

  • Villa Fidelia : It houses a rich collection of contemporary paintings, silverware, ceramics and ancient majolica. ( tiles )

  • San Girolamo : The church preserves many frescoes of the 16th century.

  • San Claudio : The church has a nice rose window and bell tower.

  • The "Belvedere": Large terrace offering a beautiful panorama of  Topino  river valley and surrounding hills.

  • The Roman Anphitheatre


    Folklore
    Corpus Christi procession in June with flower decorations,  highly evocative sight in the streets of the medieval town.


    Typical products :
    Wood works, wrought iron works, textile handicrafts, lace works. Oil and wine.

By Train : The closest railway stations are Perugia and Foligno: Train schedules

By air  : International flights to Rome or Florence - Domestic flights to Perugia.
