Saint Mary of the Angels basilica (126 m length, 75 m height ) is one of the biggest religious buildings of the Christianity. The Basilica stands in the plain at the feet of the hill of Assisi, protecting the Porziuncola, the place where Francis founded the first group of the Order of the Minor Friars and the place where he died. The church’s construction started in 1569 with a project of Galeazzo Alessi and Vignola but they finished only 110 years later. The present aspect of the church is the result of numerous restorations and the rebuilding of the façade that was destroyed after an earthquake of 1832. In 1930 was placed the statue of Madonna of the Angels.
