Wines of Abruzzo [ab-root-zoh] |
|
|
 |
Abruzzo wines have the unique character of
Italian regional wines. The region is the fifth largest
producer in the country.
Trebbiano and Montepulciano (which is the name of the grape
variety and should not be confused with Tuscany's Vino
Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG which comes from a beautiful
renaissance town near Siena and is made from Sangiovese)
dominate in the vineyard. International cultivars such as
Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are present in
small quantities and do well. A certain amount of Sangiovese
is grown, and there are also a couple of interesting minor
white varieties called Passerina and Pecorino, but there are
no signs of any of these varieties supplanting Trebbiano and
Montepulciano in the near future. |
